چکیده

Lake Tanganyika is the largest of the African rift lakes and the second deepest lake in the world (Coulter, 1991). It provides many critical services to communities in the four riparian countries of Tanzania, Zambia, D. R. Congo, and Burundi, and serves as an important source of protein through its vibrant fishery (Coulter, 1991). This fishery can be divided into two general categories based on the area of lake fished: pelagic and littoral. The pelagic fishery now consists mainly of three species (2 cluepeids-Stolothrissa tanganicae and Limnothrissa miodon-locally known as “dagaa” and Lates Stappersii) and occurs offshore in the pelagic zone. Altogether, the annual catch from these three species is estimated to be around 167,000-200,000 metric tons, almost half (~80,000 tons) of which is taken by Tanzania (Mölsä et al., 1999). The littoral fishery, on the other hand, consists of over one hundred different species and occurs from the shoreline into the littoral and sublittoral zones (0-40 m), although it also exploits species from the benthic zone (>40 m). A large sub-category of the littoral fishery is the demersal fishery, which refers to any fishing that takes place along the lake bottom, from the shoreline down to the oxic-anoxic boundary.

Investigation of biomass and catch per unite area changes of demersal resources based on swept area method in the northern waters of Oman Sea (Sistan and Baluchestan Province)

For more than two decades, assessment and monitoring of Oman Sea demersal resources has been carried out using swept area method. The study area starts from western water of Iran to border of Iran and Pakistan in the east of Oman Sea and total study area were divided into 5 sub-areas M to Q in different depth layers of 10-20, 20-30, 30-50 and 50 -100 meters. In general, the average amount of bi...

Length-Weight Relationships of Five Species of Demersal Fish from North of Persian Gulf, Iran

This study describes length-weight relationships of five species (platycephalus indicus, Pseudorhombus elevates, Plicofollis tenuispinis, Grammoplites suppositus, Pomadays stridens) collected from Persian Gulf (Khuzestan province, Iran) during December 2009 to November 2011. A total of 2065 specimen were examined for this study. The relationship between weight and to...

Predicting the effect of seine rope layout pattern and haul-in procedure on the effectiveness of demersal seine fishing: A Computer simulation-based approach

Demersal Seining is an active fishing method applying two long seine ropes and a seine net. Demersal seining relies on fish responding to the seine rope as it moves during the fishing process. The seine ropes and net are deployed in a specific pattern encircling an area on the seabed. In some variants of demersal seining the haul-in procedure includes a towing phase where the fishing vessel mov...

Trawl Selectivity in the Barents Sea Demersal Fishery

This chapter provides a general overview of the Barents Sea demersal trawl fishery. First, it reviews historical catch levels and current biomass status of four commercially important demersal species (cod, haddock, Greenland halibut, and redfish) and includes an overview of their management plan that has been carried out by the Joint Norwegian–Russian commission. Then, it presents the evolutio...

Fishing-induced shifts in a Pacific ocean fish assemblage

The US Pacific Coast has been largely free of fishery collapses that have occurred elsewhere, but the situation appears to be changing. Here, we show results from the first systematic study of demersal fishes along the US Pacific Coast. Using data from a quarter-century long, fishery-independent, coast-wide trawl survey, we document fundamental shifts in the demersal fish assemblage along the U...
